When a chip design was ready to be sent to the fabrication facility in the old days (80's, 90's) it was output on digital magnetic tape. Taping out was a momentous event that signaled that engineers had completed their arduous task. The next step after tape-out generally involved alcohol and maybe a trip to the Tied House, where I'm pretty sure the little table lamps are bugged and information gathered is used to trade stocks. These days, tape-out no longer involves magnetic tape but rather delivery of an electronic file to fabricator via a fancy new technology knowed as the Interwebs.
